How does an Affiliated Student Group get webspace?
The Head Officier or Faculty/Staff advisor must submit a request for webspace to the Office of Campus Activities and Programs.
Who has permission to manage files in a Group's webspace?
When a student group webspace is created, the Head Officer and the Faculty/Staff advisor on record are granted access. How do I gain access to my Group's webspace?

In order to gain access to a student.group directory, an individual needs to know four pieces of information:

  • The name of the server, the HOST
  • The location of their files on the server, the PATH
  • His or her USERNAME, and
  • His or her PASSWORD

For UNCG Student Organization Webspace, the above information is:

  • HOST unix.uncg.edu
  • PATH: /afs/uncg.edu/html/student.groups/DIRECTORY/
  • USERNAME: Your UNCG Username
  • PASSWORD: Your UNCG Unix password *

Example

My name is John Smith (UNCG username "J_SMITH" and Unix password "UNCG2005") and I have been granted access to the directory of the student organization "Spartans." The Spartans' student.group webspace is "spartans" and I can find the website at:
http://www.uncg.edu/student.groups/spartans/

The four pieces of information needed to access the files residing in the "spartans" student.group webspace would be:

  • HOST: unix.uncg.edu
  • PATH:/afs/uncg.edu/html/student.groups/spartans/
  • USERNAME: J_SMITH
  • PASSWORD: UNCG2005
What is my Password?
Student Organizational websites are located on UNCG's Unix server. All members of the UNCG community are given an account and password to this server.

* NOTE: Your Unix password may OR may not be the same as your UNCG Novell/Espartan password!

If you do not know your Unix password, go to UNCG Self Service Password Resetting Form (reset.uncg.edu) and follow the directions.

What programs can I use to change files in my Groups' webspace?

A person wanted to edit webspace files would configure a program, or client, with his or her username, password, host and path information in order to interact with the webspace. Common clients include:

  • Command Line clients, such as QVTNet, Better Telnet, and JellifiSSH
  • FTP Clients, such as WS_FTP, Core_FTP, FileZilla, and
  • Web Editors with built-in upload features, such as Dreamweaver or Netscape Composer.
