An outdoor recreation site, which includes outdoor basketball courts, volleyball court, a running/walking trail and a pavilion, was constructed north of the Recreation Center.
The project was completed May 2006.
The facility is named after Irwin "Ike" Belk of Charlotte, a philanthropist who is the retired president of the Belk Group Inc. retail chain. A generous contributor to higher education in the state, Belk served on the UNC Board of Governors and on the boards of trustees of UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Charlotte. He served in the North Carolina State Senate and the House of Representatives. He was also named to the U.S. Public Delegation to the 54th United Nations General Assembly by President Bill Clinton in 1999. He also served as president of the American Cancer Society Foundation for 40 years, and received its highest honor, the Merit Award, in 2002.
At UNCG, Belk created an athletic scholarship endowment with a $250,000 gift to the Students First Campaign. Belk Athletic Scholarships are made with preference given to students on the track or cross country team.
In May of 2007, Belk received an Honorary degree from UNCG.
