Gove Health Center Renovation and Addition

The Gove Student Health Center, which houses Student Health Services, was constructed and opened in 1951 as a 100-bed infirmary. In the past half-century, the practice of college health has changed considerably. The new facility was designed to accommodate the health needs of a growing and changing university.

The project's budget was $8.5 million. The two-phase project began in spring semester of 2005, with final re-occupancy completed in January of 2007.

Opened in 1953, the building was named for Dr. Anna M. Gove, who became a physician to students at the State Normal and Industrial School in 1893, and was the third woman doctor in North Carolina.

The health center will update and expand its existing clinic including the medical clinic, immunization clinic, laboratory/radiology, pharmacy, counseling and testing center and wellness center. Construction began in the Fall of 2005 for the new addition. Renovation of the original building was completed in December 2006.

The new 15,000-square-foot addition fronts on Gray Drive and has a signature glass atrium that students will have no trouble finding. The renovation doubled laboratory and X-ray service space, allowing Health Services to offer computed radiography which improves resolution.

The facility also has a check-in and check-out area at the front desk, and separate waiting areas for specialty clinics such as women's health, immunizations and wellness. Other amenities include computer-based testing in the Counseling and Testing Center and a training room for staff in-service training.

The Gove Health Center was rededicated on Saturday, April 14, 2007 by Dr. Tresa M. Saxton and Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan as part of UNCG's Alumni Reunion weekend.
