Recipients

Year Recipients
2009

Two students were awarded the Parent & Family Advisory Council Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The first recipient is Corrinne Rogers. Corrinne has been involved with the Moore-Strong Residence Hall Council. In her role, she has worked with other council members to provide programs that help build community and assisted in raising $2,500 for Stop Hunger Now. Corrinne has been actively involved with the Women's Club Soccer team, volunteering to arrive early and stay late to assist with preparation for and clean up after games. She has been nominated to be next year's team captain and her goal is to encourage school pride and team commitment. In addition, Corrinne volunteers weekly with Daystar's youth group. She has excelled academically, as is evidenced by her recent induction in Alpha Lambda Delta. Her reference indicated that Amy's "warmth is positively infections" and she is "a great asset to UNCG...and is making others' experiences richer through her efforts."

The next recipient is Joseph Pratico. Joe has served as the Rotaract Club President and, in this role, he has successfully doubled the group's attendance, participated in the Greensboro Leukemia Walk, and coordinated distribution of holiday cards to local senior citizens. Joe has also been actively involved in Pi Kappa Alpha and worked with his fraternity brothers to successfully obtain a charter. He has volunteered at Weaver House and has been able to see the impact the currently economic downtown is having on our community firsthand. Joe's reference also described his involvement as co-founder of UNCG Good Life, an organization promoting student health and fitness, as well as co-captain of Intramural Basketball and Flag Football teams. His reference went on to explain that Joe is "partially financing his own educationÉand has learned to successfully juggle a full academic load while working part-time and being an active leader and volunteer both on campus and in the community."

2008

Two students were awarded the Parent & Family Advisory Council Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.

The first recipient is Amy DiTommaso. In her application, Amy discussed her involvement in creating Dancing Above the Barre, a program that teaches ballet to young girls with physical disabilities. The purpose of the program is to build self-esteem while providing physical therapy. Amy developed the program with limited input or guidance due to the fact that there are very few programs like it in the country. Through her involvement, she also encouraged other UNCG students to volunteer for the program through the student organization Girls Reaching Out (GRO). In discussing Amy’s impact, her reference stated that "Amy will probably never know how she has touched the lives of the eight young girls that have benefited from her teaching, but beyond that, she has touched the lives of their families, friends, and anyone who is lucky enough to come across the story of Dancing Above the Barre."

The next recipient is Joseph Pratico. Joe is extremely involved both around campus and the community. His involvements include serving as a Community Advisory; Treasurer for his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha; Professional Development Chair for Rotaract Act Organization; Mentor for the Leaders Emerging and Developing Program; inductee to the National Residence Hall Honorary; a member of the Blue Crew; and participating in intramural sports. Through his numerous involvements, Joe has participated in a great number of community service projects such as Rotaract Acts events raising money for water purification systems in Mexico; Pikeapolooza, supporting North Carolina National Guard Soldiers; and HOSA’a Autism Jump-A-Thon. His reference indicated that "he goes out of his way to make sure student’s needs are being met" and "is the first to volunteer to help with projects around campus and is certainly one of the most well recognized students at UNCG."
