This scholarship was created from gifts from Jim Allen's family, colleagues, students and friends. Mr. Allen arrived at UNCG in 1967 as the Presbyterian Campus Minister, and was named Dean of Students in 1971. Two years later he was appointed Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, a position he held for 23 years until his retirement in 1996.
Amount of Scholarship: The scholarship this year is a $1,000 award.
Eligibility Guidelines:
The Allen Scholarship is awarded to a rising Senior who has distinguished him/herself as a student leader during his/her first three years at UNCG; Must be a full time student at time of award and in good academic standing; Must have no conduct violations within the past twelve months and no problems resulting in probation or separation from the university.

Cover letter and resume outlining leadership activities at UNCG; Two letters of reference (at least one must be from a peer in a group you lead on campus) Submit application to the Office of Campus Activities and Programs, 221 Elliott University Center. | 2009 | The 2009 recipient is David Klein. David is described as "one who leads with character and follows through with what he sets out to accomplish." He "successfully leads and serves his peers due to the character he shows in his consideration of others' feelings and perspectives, when making decisions and interacting with others." David has "a respectful and thoughtful nature." He "makes other leaders and community members feel valued and worthwhile, regardless of their level of experience and set of opinions." He "is an exceptional person who is fun to be around and is a team player." David is a member of the Dean's List and has been an especially involved member of this community the past three years. Some examples of David's contributions to our community include: Member of the Residence Hall Association; Member of the Lacrosse Club; EUC Facility Manager; Scholarship Committee Chair, Recruitment Committee Chair, and Pledge Educator for his fraternity; President of Kappa Delta Rho; President of the Inter-Fraternity Council; Various fund-raising activities for the National Multiple Sclerosis Association, for a scholarship competition for sororities, and is currently working on a scholarship to provide books for incoming male freshmen; Off campus service as a mentor for a fourth grader at Hampton Elementary. |
| 2008 | The 2008 recipient is Camila Perez-Albert. Camila is described as "one who has built an impactful reputation in the UNCG community as a poised, mature student leader". She has "time management skills which are developed far beyond her years." Camila has "achieved a command of her responsibilities in a way that many professionals strive to achieve." Camila "approaches all situations with awareness and a concern about how it will make others feel, yet is not afraid to challenge others and hold them accountable for fulfilling their responsibilities." She "consistently anticipates challenges and strategically works to prevent setbacks, yet remains flexible" in all of his/her endeavors.
Camila is a member of the Dean's List and has been honored by membership in Order of Omega Honor Society. Some examples of Camila's contributions to the UNCG community include: Facility Assistant, Weight Room Supervisor, and now Senior Supervisor in Campus Recreation; Vice President of Fraternal Relations — Alpha Chi Omega;Vice President Administrative Affairs — National Panhellenic Council; Vice President Recruitment — National Panhellenic Council; President — National Panhellenic Council; Various fund-raising activities such as Rock Sit, MS Walk, adopt-a-soldier; Campus program volunteer for Take Back the Night and the Clothesline Project; Off campus service for After Gateway and Habitat for Humanity. |
| 2007 | The 2007 recipient is Jonae Wartel. Jonae has been described as "one who has successfully combined campus leadership with academic success". She embraced the concept of involvement almost from the time of setting foot on campus. Involved in many student organizations, Jonae is one who is "very positive, hard working, with a strong passion for success". She is dedicated to improving UNCG, the Greensboro community, and the world. Jonae is an Undergraduate Merit Scholar, a Lichtin Family Honors Scholar, an Anna Shaw Scholar, and a member of the Dean’s List and Chancellor’s List.
