What drew you UNCG?
I went to UNCG because of the small class sizes. This provided some level of one on one interactions with faculty. I also liked the location of the University. It was close enough to my home that I would be able to drive there or have family up to visit me, when possible.
What did being a student leader at UNCG mean to you?
My leadership opportunities provided me with insight into the inner workings of the University and provided me with experience in working with other organizations about pertinent information that affects others. It also provided me with lifelong connections (friends and faculty).
What is your favorite UNCG memory?
My favorite memories were in the Residential College. I spent many late nights talking with friends and getting support. These friendships are now life-long.
What advice would you give current UNCG students or specifically, student leaders?
Student leaders should be aware of the student population and the individual needs of that population. Leaders have to be willing to listen and support others. While serving as a Resident Assistant, I had the opportunity to meet one young man and assist him. I was not aware that when I did this that a lifelong friendship would happen and as of this day, he still remembers that I stopped what I was doing to assist him for a few minutes. It did not mean a lot to me at the time but I understood how difficult things could be for freshmen and helped him as I would do others. It meant the world to him.
What have you been doing since graduating?
I have been involved in the field of social work since I graduated in 1990. I have been in a variety of settings which range from Head Start, Mental Health, Counseling, and Social Services. I returned home for a few years after graduation, married and relocated to Durham, NC approximately eight years ago. I am currently employed as a Foster Care Social Worker in Orange County.
