What drew you UNCG?
My older sister attended UNCG that gave me opportunity to visit campus and see what college life was like.
What did being a student leader at UNCG mean to you?
First and most importantly it meant free food. Secondly, as a commuting student that I could stay more connected to the campus. By being involved in student activities I had a place to hang out between classes, friends to meet. Also, being a student leader was somewhat like having a practical lab for things you would study in psychology and management. My first management job with responsibilities for hiring staff, making schedules and evaluating performance came through my student activities experience.
What is your favorite UNCG memory?
It was very rewarding to see a student program idea that had been hatched around a table come into fruition. I remember discussing the idea of bringing a semi demolished car on campus during exam week, proving sledge hammers and letting students take a whack at it for stress relief. Couple of weeks later there in the "L" sat a 1984 Caprice Classic that had seen better days. Students were lined up to take a whack at it.
What advice would you give current UNCG students or specifically, student leaders?
Figure out what the 5 most important accomplishments are for your time in leadership at UNCG, rank them, forget #4 and #5 and focus on your top three. It goes by quick.
What have you been doing since graduating?
I am a management consultant to local governments and travel throughout North Carolina . I’m married to Teresa (Steel) '93, '96 a wonderful UNCG educated nurse that I met through my involvement in Student Activities and the fact that we both spent too much time at EUC together. We have two boys, Elliott 7 and Luke 5. We enjoy getting out to go camping, hiking, kayaking and boating. Any excuse to get on the water is a good one.
