What drew you to UNCG?
Location was a big factor. It is about an hour from my hometown, Eden. I had been on campus many times and felt right at home. I was accepted for early admission and did not apply anywhere else.
What did being a student leader at UNCG mean to you?
Being a leader at UNCG gave me many great opportunities to meet and work with people of all ages, races, religions, etc. I was able to travel to Washington DC with other female student leaders for a National Women's Conference, to the Southeastern Panhellenic Conference and to dozens of other universities for North Carolina Student Legislature meetings. I was exposed to so many new things and concepts. My biggest realization was that you can make a difference no matter what your age. That is something that I now try to instill in my own children and the youth I work with each day.
What is your favorite UNCG memory?
Of course, I have many wonderful memories with my sorority sisters and really many of my panhellenic sisters. They are too numerous to count. As a leader, one of my best memories is serving as an intern in the Student Activities Office and getting to be on the other side of things for awhile. Working with the Freshmen Emerging Leaders Program was very rewarding.
What advice would you give to current UNCG student leaders?
Take every opportunity you are given. Be willing to go out on a limb for the things you believe in. Believe in yourself. Take the time to teach those that will follow you.
What have you been doing since graduation?
I live in Eden, NC with my husband Matt and children, Jacob (5) and Jenna (1). I have worked at Leaksville United Methodist Church as Director or Christian Education and Programs since 2001. I love my job! I work with people of all ages and spend much of my time with youth and children. One of my favorite things about my job is planning mission opportunities. I will be taking a group of senior high and college students to Costa Rica in June and another group of youth to the Gulf Coast in July. I also stay busy volunteering with Communities in Schools as a mentor and serve as Chairperson of The Eden Main Street Advisory Board. I have a monthly radio show on our local station called Eye on Eden. I also enjoy keeping connected to UNCG through the Student Affairs Development Advisory Group.
