IV Major Requirements
30 semester hours at the 200 level and above. To complete a second major, at least
12 semester hours must be taken outside the major in which the first major is obtained.
No requirements for the major can be met by a grade lower than C-.
- Foreign Language Requirements (6 s.h.)
A modern foreign language at the 300 level or higher.
Chinese or Japanese in the case of Asian Studies; Spanish, French, German, Italian,
or Portuguese in the case of European Studies; Spanish, French, or Portuguese in
the case of Latin American and Caribbean Studies; Russian in the case of Russian
Studies. Other languages subject to permission of the Director. Note that Italian
and Portuguese are not currently available at the upper levels at UNCG.
- Core Courses (6 s.h.)
IGS 200 or 201 or an approved equivalent; IGS 400
- Additional courses (18 s.h.): At least nine (9) s.h. must be
completed at the 300 level or above.
For students majoring or second majoring in a General Studies area, at least fifteen
(15) of the 18 s.h. must be taken in courses specific to their concentration, including
nine (9) at the 300 level or above.
For students majoring or second majoring in the International and Global Human Rights
concentration, up to 3 s.h. may be related to human rights in the U.S.
Majors and second majors pursuing a Regional Studies concentration area must complete
at least twelve (12) s.h. appropriate to their region, with at least six (6) s.h.
at the 300 level or above.
To be selected from the following categories, consistent with the student's declared
concentration, with up to three (3) courses (9 s.h.) in one category and no more
than two (2) courses (6 s.h.) in any other category:
- Society and Politics: Any course with a 50 percent
or more focus on social, historical, and political issues of international and/or
global relevance
- Economics and Development: Any course with a 50
percent or more focus on international and/or global issues in economics and development
- Arts and Literature: Any course with a 50 percent
or more focus on the arts and/or literatures of nations and cultures outside of
the United States, or any course reading literature in a foreign language at the
300 level or above
- Belief Systems and Cultures: Any course with a
50 percent or more focus on ideologies, philosophies, and belief systems unique
to and/or interconnected with other nations and peoples of the world
IGS 223, 333, 493, and 495 may be included for credit in any of these four categories
depending upon the content of the course, which may vary from semester to semester
V Electives
Electives sufficient to complete the 122 hours required for degree.
