Art Major (ART)

II General Education Marker Requirements

See details and courses. It is possible to meet all GE Marker Requirements while completing the GE Core requirements or courses required by the major/concentration.

Students may select courses for:

Global/Global Non-Western Perspectives (GL/GN)
four (4) courses carrying GL/GN markers, at least one of which must carry the GN marker

One Speaking Intensive (SI) Course
In addition to this SI Marker requirement, students must also complete a second SI course within the major. All programs have identified at least one course among their major requirements that is taught as Speaking Intensive.

One Writing Intensive (WI) Course
In addition to this WI Marker requirement, students must also complete a second WI course within the major. All programs have identified at least one course among their major requirements that is taught as Writing Intensive.

 

III Major Requirements

A. Studio Requirements

Studio Core (39 semester hours)

  1. ART 100 or 101
  2. Four additional courses in Art History above the 100 level
  3. Studio Art: ART 120, 140, 150, 220, 221
  4. Painting and Design: ART 232, 241
  5. Crafts Art: ART 281 and 373 or ART 281 and 381

Studio Concentration in Design, Painting, or Sculpture (9 semester hours)

  • Design: 9 s.h. from ART courses numbered in the 280s, 340s, 370s, 380s, 440s, 470s, 480s except for those courses required under Studio Core
  • Painting: 9 s.h. from ART courses numbered in the 220s, 230s, 320s, 330s, 420s, 430s, except for ART 323 and those courses required under Studio Core
  • Sculpture: 9 s.h. from ART courses numbered in the 250s, 350s, 450s

B. Art Education Requirements

Pedagogical Expertise/Art Education (21 semester hours)

Professional Development/Art Education (15 semester hours)

IV Teacher Education (7 semester hours)

V Admission to Student Teaching:

During the junior year students must apply for admission to Teacher Education and student teaching. Art Education courses ART 361, 363, 364, 365, 368, and 369 are prerequisites to student teaching and should be taken prior to student teaching. Student Teaching ART 463 and ART 465 are taken in the spring semester.

Admission requirements for Teacher Education include the following:

  1. Medical clearance
  2. Grade point average of at least 2.70
  3. Art 360, Foundations of Art Education, which includes pre-student-teaching practicum
  4. Evidence of skills, knowledge, dispositions, and competencies as set and evaluated by the department

VI Electives

Electives sufficient to complete the 128 semester hours required for the degree.
