Adult students face unique challenges in the quest for higher education. It may be children needing additional attention, a spouse desiring reassurance or the crisis of an aging parent. In any of these situations, one thing can keep you motivated. Why are you here? Why are you doing this? When you finish and look back, you will see rewards that you never imagined. New friendships, new perspectives, new appreciations and newfound confidence are all residual benefits that come along with completing your degree. You can do it! And it IS worth it!

I think you get more out of your classes as an adult. At least that's been true for me. You have a better perspective on what's important and can get through all the challenges of juggling your life by thinking about the end result of graduating.

As a non-traditional student attending university, you are not only bettering your life, but setting examples for those around you. So many people are afraid to give up what they know, the mundane day-in-and-day-out of life, to pursue their goals and dreams. When times are tough, remind yourself that you’ll be stronger for getting through it. Remind yourself that in two, three, or four years you could have a degree, or you could simply be that many years older. Employers and loved ones will have respect for your endeavors, and you will prove to the most important person that you can achieve—yourself.

Marina Nougda - Marina Nougda's Profile
Being in school is not necessarily about getting the best job. The education itself is important. It is all very personal. The degree gives me credibility. I know I can have ideas and I can back them up. And before I didn’t have that."

Pursuing knowledge has been my fountain of youth. You don't need to be certain about what you will eventually do with your degree. The fact that you start and pursue it is powerful. Mentally, it opens windows and doors you can't really foresee.

The opportunities for intellectual expansion have been remarkable, and I have been thoroughly inspirited by the examples of excellence set forth by UNCG’S dedicated faculty. I am indelibly imprinted by their presentation of education “as a way of life,” rather than something that merely occurs at a point in a life.

Even classes I had not looked forward to turned out to be exciting. I had always heard that Western Civ was the worst nightmare imaginable. It turned out to be one of my favorite classes. I never could imagine why anyone wanted to study Latin or Greek. Finally I knew. I wanted to study those languages.

I took a 500 level Archeology class, something I knew nothing about, and greatly enjoyed it. I have never enjoyed literature classes, but I took a Shakespeare class and to my surprise it was a lot of fun.

It has done wonders for my self image to finish college. I feel more confident in myself. I enjoy different things too. I’m more interested in literature and enjoy reading more than ever. Being able to communicate better is one of the biggest things. An oral report I dreaded in my first class brought out a side I never knew I had.

Marilyn Lauritzen - Marilyn Lauritzen's Profile
You really do feel young, not because the people around you are young, but because approaching life with the idea that you have something to learn is a refreshing attitude to have. Coming back to college as an adult was one of the best things I ever did, without a shadow of a doubt.
