The mission of the UNCG Leadership Institute is to develop and promote a culture of innovation and leadership consistent with the goals of UNCG's Strategic Plan 2009-2014, UNCG Tomorrow. In essence, the Institute will contribute to the creation of an inclusive, collaborative, and responsive institution. The program is specifically tailored to meet the needs and resources of the university in terms of its vision, direction, organizational strategy, challenges, and culture.
Research indicates that many important qualities are associated with leadership such as agility, foresight, integrity, collaboration, creativity, authenticity, social responsibility, engagement, accountability, talent management, and client connectivity. These leadership competencies can also be developed and strengthened through action-based and experiential learning. The result of such a developmental experience is improved performance for both the individuals themselves and the work units they serve. In addition, the program represents a cost-effective investment that allows university participants to gain state-of-the-art knowledge and experiences that promote effective leadership.
Benefits to the Department and the University
Departments will benefit from the program as the participants will demonstrate the following attributes to their supervisors, co-workers, and colleagues:
- Increased institutional knowledge
- Enhanced confidence and leadership efficacy
- Conceptual understanding of leadership principles
- Increased capacity for leadership and collaboration
- Ability to build a high-performance workplace
The UNCG Leadership Institute is designed to provide staff, faculty, and administrators with a significant, year-long opportunity to increase their leadership skills and accelerate their own leadership performance and readiness at the unit, department, or division level. The program is focused on emerging leaders. It will cover important topics in leadership, but also provide participants with the opportunity to engage in action learning through the development of a project to solve an institutional issue or problem with guidance from a coaching mentor. Participants will present their completed project to the Chancellor and Executive Staff at the close of the Leadership Institute Program. The program will begin in February 2012 and consist of eight all-day and half-day sessions held throughout the calendar year.
The UNCG Leadership Institute will accelerate leadership contributions by:
- Enhancing leadership capacity at the departmental or university level
- Providing state-of-the-art knowledge on leadership practices
- Aligning vision, talent, and behaviors for unit or team excellence with institutional goals
Specific Experiences the Program will Offer
- Opportunities for interaction with Chancellor Brady and other UNCG Executive Staff

- Enhanced business acumen and financial literacy
- Practical strategies for improved team performance including group dynamics, meetings, and engagement
