exam tips

  • Get necessary information about the test. Orient yourself with the course syllabus online, study guides, and other information provided by your instructor to be familiar with format, content, and other requirements.
  • Study course content weekly. The best tip is to study course content as it comes along, so you are already familiar with the topic in detail before repeating it for the test.
  • Start early. According to test dates noted in the syllabus, begin reviewing course content ahead of time, at least two weeks before the test date.
  • Study in groups. To stay motivated, try learning in groups. This helps you process topics in more detail because you're learning it from different perspectives.
  • Plan your study schedule. Determine what units, readings or course material you will study and review on which days.
  • Ask for clarification. When course content or other relevant test criteria are unclear, review the course syllabus. If you don’t find what you're looking for, ask for help from your instructor or peer learners.
  • Test your knowledge. If available, answer the questions in your textbook and study guide.
  • Understand the material. It's essential for tests, but also for applying knowledge and skills in the “real world,” to thoroughly understand the concepts and ideas of your class. Use all the provided study resources and take advantage of online discussions to deeply process the topic.
  • Follow your instructor’s advice. The instructor might also point out important content for tests, for example, in announcements. Pay attention and focus on the important aspects mentioned.
  • Repeat often. After you understand the concepts and ideas of your course, repeat the material often to feel comfortable talking and writing about it.
