ensuring child's success

Students often have the ability and preparation to succeed in an introductory-level college course, but they lack the study skills, time-management skills, or self-motivation to succeed. As a parent or guardian of an online learner you should be supportive and informed. You can help your student make a successful transition through observation, communication, and frequent encouragement.

  1. Discuss course selection with your child. Make sure the course is an appropriate fit for your student.
  2. Read your student's course syllabus. It provides an overview of the course, learning objectives, assignments, and exams and explains how coursework will be graded.
  3. Print a copy of the course calendar and make sure your student is working in a timely manner. The calendar plots the material to be covered each week and when exams will be taken.
  4. Take note of the reading assignments. Make sure your child keeps up with class reading. Staying on track alleviates a lot of potential pressure.
  5. Ask your student to share his or her progress and evaluations. At any time your child can log into his/her Blackboard course and let you see assignments and grades.
  6. Know where to go for help. The iSchool Help Desk is your first point of contact for UNCG iSchool. See the Online Help section below for contact information. At your high school, the facilitator may be the first point of contact.
  7. Make the most of this experience. Your student shouldn't lose sight of the reason why he/she enrolled. UNCG iSchool courses can help your child transition from high school to college.

Due to technical issues, access to some online courses is currently unavailable. Access will be restored as soon as possible.
