Online BLS Degree FAQ

How long will it take me to finish my degree?

That depends on how many transferable credits you have when you begin the program and how many courses you take each semester. A minimum of 122 credit hours is required for graduation, so most people will have to take additional courses.

You will have 30 departmental BLS hours that you must complete. You will also need to satisfy any outstanding general education requirements. Note: A minimum of 31 hours must be completed "in residence." You do not physically have to come to the campus but you'll need to complete 31 hours of UNCG coursework.

What kind of choices will I have in planning my schedule?

We recommend that you take only one course per 8 week session, however some students will choose to double up. You will choose your area of emphasis-literature, fine arts, philosophy/religion/ethics, or historical perspectives. You have the freedom to choose your electives, once General Education Core requirements are met.

How do I find out which credits will transfer to UNCG?

The Registrar's Office is officially responsible for making that determination. However, you can visit the university Adult and Student Transfer services Web site http://web.uncg.edu/adm/transfer/default.htm to get an idea about which of your credits will transfer.

How large will the classes be?

Size varies, but expect about 25-35 students per class.

Do I have to go through the same application process that I would for on-campus degrees?

Yes. Refer to admissions procedure.

Are there any entrance examinations?

Not if you are an adult or transfer student who has completed 30 transferable hours of college coursework. You will need a total of 60 transferable hours to be admissible to the BLS program.

How much does the program cost?

Tuition for NC residents is approximately $265.00 per course. If you're out of state, there is a different tuition structure. Books and other supplies are extra.

Will I ever have to come to campus?

No. All questions, details, materials, courses, and tests will be handled online, by email or by phone. You are always welcome to visit the campus and the BLS program staff (CASA, 25 Foust Building).

Where can I find online electives and additional course requirements?

UNCG offers many online courses that will meet your needs. However, credits may also be transferred from other accredited universities and community colleges. Note, you may transfer a maximum of 64 semester hours from the community college.

Who are my professors?

BLS instructors are the same professors currently teaching at UNCG. They are among some of the best in their fields, have won distinguished teaching awards, and have an interest in working with adult students.

How do I contact my professor?

Virtual office hours are usually outlined at the beginning of each course. There are email and phone call options as well.

What kind of contact will I have with other online students?

Contact varies, depending on the course, but most professors require posting in a discussion forum, and timely student responses to those postings. Some courses also incorporate virtual teams and study groups, and you always have the option of forming your own virtual group.

What kind of computer do I need? Do I need high-speed Internet access to participate?

We recommend that students have access to one of the following system set-ups:

  • MAC: Mac OS X, 196 MB RAM G3 processor or better. Although Broadband/fast access/cable modem is preferred, you'll need at least a 56kbps modem connection. Firefox or Safari.
  • PC: Windows XP or better, 196 MBRAM, Pentium III or better (or at least a processor running 333 Mhz or better) Although Broadband/fast access/cable modem is preferred, you'll need at least a 56kbps modem connection. IE 6 or Firefox.

Do I have to "attend" class at a certain time?

No. There are deadlines and assignment due dates to meet, but when you log on is completely up to you.

Will I have someone at UNCG available to help me through the particulars of this process?

Absolutely. A good place to start is with Jay Parr, BLS program manager. He is available to meet with you Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm . You can reach him at 336-334-4977 or jcparr@uncg.edu.

Can I apply for financial aid?

Yes, as long as you are enrolled for at least 6 hours. Some scholarships are designated for adult students age 24 years and older. Loans and grants are also available by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (fafsa.ed.gov).

Where do I buy books?

Course textbooks are available through online booksellers such as Barnes and Noble.com. Some course readings are available online and through library reserves.

It's been a long time since I've taken classes. Will there be online research, study, writing, and computer assistance?

UNCG iCampus (http://www.uncgicampus.com/) provides tips and resources for succeeding online.  As well, the university offers online writing sessions for admitted students.

Can I test-drive a course without being formally admitted to the program?

Yes. You may contact the Division of Continual Learning to register for a course. Keep in mind that any grades earned at UNCG will appear on your UNCG transcript.

Is there a limit to the number of hours that I may take as a visiting student?

Yes. The total number of hours a visiting student may take is limited to 21 with no restrictions on the number of semesters. The requirements for maintaining good academic standing are the same as our requirements for regularly admitted students.

I attended UNCG in the past. How do I re-enroll?

Returning students will need to complete the former student application (http://web.uncg.edu/adm/applications/) via undergraduate admissions.  After readmission to the university, returning students will need to see an academic advisor before registering for classes.  Information will be sent prior to registration times.  For more information, visit http://web.uncg.edu/adm/former/
