Time Management
Since you have a lot of flexibility concerning time in your online class, a key to success is managing your studying time according to your personal needs and living environment. The following steps will support your success in your online class.
- Read your course schedule and the syllabus. Orient yourself with the course schedule and syllabus of your online class to get an idea about how much time you need to study and to help you develop your weekly schedule.
- Develop a weekly schedule. Note course and other commitments on a dailly basis by using a timetable—be realistic about your schedule.
- Write down your non-course related responsibilities, such as fixed work hours in a job or family commitments.
- Schedule daily study times. Commit to working for the class more on open days and less on very busy days.
- Pencil in your specific course activities. Dedicate hours each week for your various course specific assignments, such as reading your units, book chapters, articles on e-reserve, participating in the threaded discussion.
- Use study breaks to relax. Effective studying also includes giving yourself a 15-minute break after every 45 minutes of work.
- Reserve enough time for health-supporting activities. Pencil in a healthy number of hours for sleep, eating, personal essentials, and free-time activities in your timetable.
- Stick to your timetable for one week. Effective time management is a skill that needs time to grow. If you were happy with your weekly results, stick to this timetable. If necessary, adjust it based on your experience of the previous week and on other environmental situations.
- Assign some additional time for studying in weeks of exams or other due dates. Anticipate spending more time on working for your class in weeks where you take an exam or when you have to finish a paper.
