An Online Economics Class
Economics 100 is an online game for college credit. It teaches the introductory
principles of economics while integrating critical concepts from history, ethics,
math, and the physical and social sciences.
In the Economics 100 game scenario, an alien craft crash-lands on a futuristic, post-apocalyptic Earth. In order to subsist and create a prosperous society, crash survivors must learn the basic principles of economics-such as scarcity, savings and investments, trade, foreign aid, and sustainable growth.
Course content is presented through problem-solving tasks that are part of the overarching narrative - all portrayed in 3D-like animation.
Through analysis and decision-making as they play the game, students learn that economics is a way of thinking. They are taught to understand trade-offs, anticipate consequences and make decisions based on logical analysis.
There is no course syllabus for Economics 100, and there are no traditional tests. Instead, we closely monitor each student's progress online and rely on game-playing techniques to gauge whether they have grasped each level of course content and are ready to move ahead.
Students take Economics 100 when and where they like. A PC and Internet connection are all they need.
An online chat tool that promotes collaboration among students as they play the game - giving them an opportunity to form a true learning community.

Why gaming is a good fit for economics?
Economics is a way of thinking. To truly learn the subject involves far more than memorizing a list of terms or learning a formula or two.
It's not unusual to hear students on today's college campuses talk about "surviving" economics. Most lack even a rudimentary background in the subject and don't "get" the underlying concepts when delivered in a lecture setting.
Gaming allows students to move beyond rote exercises and lectures to experience economics.to see how the decisions they make play out and how various factors and disciplines are interrelated. They learn not only the underlying principles, but how to apply them in a variety of situations.
