TEXTBOOK READING
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Charon Text

Read pages 151-153.

WEB RESEARCH
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Access to External Web Site

Search for "efficacy" in your favorite search engine. (Access Google here.) Explore some of the sites on "self-efficacy."

As you are exploring the Web Sites you encounter, think about the following questions:

  • What is self-efficacy? In what specific ways does our topic of power (having/expressing power-powerlessness) tie into efficacy?

  • Why is it important to feel some level of power in our social relations?

  • What are some examples of where you find power and powerlessness in your own life?

ONLINE DISCUSSION
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Access to Online Discussion Board

Employ exchange theory and come up with at least five different ways power is present in your lives. Make sure to avoid the stereotypical notions of power (like your parents and teachers) and come up with examples of "peer power." In what ways is power used in your interactions with other students or friends? Or you can even come up with examples from daily life, like interactions at the mall, bar, or movies. In each case, describe the power, who has the power, why they have the power, and how the power might be changed. (I'll get you started in the right direction: how can we think of dating as power relations? What exchange resources do men and women bring to the "dating market"?)

Report your findings in the discussion forum. Read and respond to other entries in the discussion.
