Unit 5:  Henri IV (1589—1643)

In this unit, we will explore the changes to Paris during the reign of Henri IV, a Protestant king who converted to Catholicism. During his reign, Henri IV saw building as a way to create a magnificent capital and provide work for those left unemployed by the Wars of Religion. He undertook completion of the Louvre and the Tuileries, and though his plans were not fully realized, he inspired further developers. The king also guided the construction of the Pont Neuf, the Place Dauphine, and the Place Royale. He also founded the Hôpital St-Louis for plague sufferers and oversaw completion of the Hôtel de Ville. In this unit, we will also look at the influence of Henri IV's ex-wife, Queen Margot.
