Professor Bio

William O. Goode is a graduate of Washington and Lee (B.A.) and Duke Universities (M.A. and Ph.D). He also studied at the Université de Poitiers in France and has taught French language and literature at the University of Maryland , the University of Pennsylvania , and, since 1974, at UNCG. His specialty is 17 th -century French literature, and he has published articles on Mme de Lafayette, Rotrou, Corneille, and Molière.

While participating in a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar entitled “City Scenes: Culture and Society in Seventeenth-Century London and Paris,” he became interested in the urban history of Paris and later developed a course on this subject (in French) for the UNCG Department of Romance Languages. He has taught this course several times, the last time as an online course. His research in this field has led to the publication of articles on “Molière's Paris ,” on “Three French Queens and the Urban History of Paris,” and on “Vaux-le-Vicomte,” the 17 th century chateau near Paris that inspired Versailles .
