Peer Academic Leader Job Description
The Interview and Selection Process
- Complete and submit an application to Nannette Funderburk in Student Academic Services.
- Have 2 recommendation forms submitted on your behalf. Recommenders must have worked with you as a UNCG professor or UNCG supervisor (Professional references are required. Character references from friends and/or family members will not be accepted.)
- Applications will be reviewed and individuals will be selected for a panel interview.
- If selected after completing the panel interview, you will be scheduled for a 30 minute individual interview with Student Academic Services staff members.
- Final selections will be made and Peer Academic Leader Commitment Declarations will be signed.
Job Expectations and Requirements
- All Peer Academic Leaders must uphold all academic and discipline standards as defined by the university’s Student Code of Conduct and Academic Good Standing Policy.
- Necessary personal characteristics for this position include: knowledge of campus resources, appreciation of diversity, maturity, approachability, dependability, flexibility, good communication skills, willingness and ability to model appropriate behavior, ability to maintain confidentiality, and ability to mentor first-year students.
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.75
- Sophomore standing or above as of the fall 2009 semester.
- Completion of a Peer Academic Leader Training Workshop held in April 2009.
- Completion of Safe Talk training to be held during the first week of fall 2009 classes (Multiple dates will be available).
Responsibilities
- Serve as a role model of positive behavior, representing the University with pride and respect.
- Serve as an advocate for the interests, needs, and rights of first-year UNCG students.
- Help students adjust and become academically successful.
- Serve as a mentor for academic, co-curricular, and leadership involvement.
- Assist instructor in planning class logistics.
- Assist in facilitating class discussions.
- Serve as a liaison for student feedback to instructor.
- Attend all class meetings for your assigned UNS class.
- Maintain confidentiality of students and maintain appropriate relationships.
- Assist in coordination of semester UNS events.
*** The scheduling of courses is an intricate process that undergoes many changes before being finalized. If the number of UNS course offerings is reduced, some who are selected as PALs may not be able to continue as PALs.***
