Transfer and Adult Students
UNCG welcomes more than 1,000 new transfer and adult students each year. In fact, in recent years 30 percent of our graduates began their college programs at other institutions. We encourage you to become part of our educational community. Please explore our online resources for adult and transfer students and remember that we have staff members available to help answer any questions. We also invite you to attend a Transfer Tuesday Information Session to learn more about the University and the admission process.

About the Transfer Class
- UNCG typically receives more than 3,200 transfer applications for the fall semester.
- There were 1,444 students in the fall 2008 transfer class.
Do I qualify as a transfer student?
- A transfer student has greater than 30 college credit hours that will successfully transfer from a regionally accredited institution.
- A freshman transfer student has fewer than 30 college credit hours that will successfully transfer from a regionally accredited institution. A freshman transfer must meet requirements under both transfer and freshman admissions programs and must submit an official SAT or ACT score.
- If you have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university, we welcome your interest in pursuing a second degree at UNCG. You would be considered a second degree-seeking student.
- Former students are students who have previously attended UNCG (without completing a degree) during a regular academic term, summer session not included. If you did complete a degree at UNCG or another institution, please see our Second Degree page.
Admissions Requirements and Application Information
Admission Requirements
Traditional transfer applicants are required to:
- Have 30 semester hours or more of transferable college credit from a regionally accredited institution. Students with fewer than 30 hours must submit SAT or ACT scores for evaluation and must meet freshman admission standards.
- Have a minimum overall and transferable grade point average of at least a 2.0 as calculated by UNCG.
- Be eligible to return to the last institution attended.
- Meet the UNC-System Minimum Course Requirements (MCR) for high school preparation* including:
- English: 4 units (emphasis on grammar, composition, and literature)
- Math: 4 units including algebra I, geometry, algebra II, and one advanced course beyond algebra II. The fourth unit of math is required for students who graduated from high school in 2006 and beyond. (Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for a list of courses that will satisfy the advanced math requirement.)
- Science: 3 units including one unit of life or biological science, one unit of physical science, and one laboratory course.
- Social Science: 2 units (must include one unit of U.S. history and one unit of history, economics, sociology, or civics).
- Foreign Language: 2 units of the same language (required for 2004 high school graduates and beyond)
*Applicants who are under 24 years of age and who are missing one of the required high school units (MCR) or have earned a GED must do one of the following:
- Graduate from a regionally accredited two-year institution with an Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Science (AS), or Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) degree.
- Complete a minimum of 6 semester hours (or 9 quarter hours) each of college level English, mathematics, science, social science, and college transfer electives. Students who graduated from high school in 2004 or later must substitute 6 semester hours (or 9 quarter hours) of foreign language for the electives. All courses must be taken at an accredited institution with grades of "C" or better.
Application Process
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive all application materials by the dates listed. We accept transfer students for fall and spring semesters. UNCG operates under rolling admission for transfers and adults, so the earlier you apply, the better. You will be notified in writing of the decision.
Application Deadlines
- Transfer priority consideration applications due:
- Spring 2010 - October 1
- Fall 2010 - March 1
- Final application deadlines (space permitting):
- Spring 2010 - December 1
- Fall 2010 - August 1
NOTE: A new process implemented by the UNC system requires us to request additional information regarding campus safety questions, if needed. If an application is received without reasonable time to collect this information, it may be deferred to the next application term.
The following materials are required:
- Application and $45 application fee
- Official transcripts for the secondary school attended (and GED scores or adult high school diploma, if applicable) and from all post-secondary institution(s) attended, including summer, extension, developmental, and technical credit*
- Check the Academics/Majors page for special requirements for each program.
*High school transcripts are not required for second-degree seeking students.
