Transfer/Adult Students

Two students working on project

UNCG welcomes over 1,000 new transfer and adult students each year. In fact, more than one-third of our recent graduates began their college education at other institutions. We encourage you to become part of our educational community. Please explore our online resources for adult and transfer students and remember that we have staff members available to help answer any questions. We also invite you to attend an Adult and Transfer Information Session to learn more about the University and the admission process.

Application Deadlines

Transfer priority consideration applications due:

  • March 1 for fall semester
  • October 1 for spring semester

Final application deadlines (space permitting):

  • August 1 for fall semester
  • December 1 for spring semester

*A new process implemented by the UNC system requires us to request additional information regarding campus safety questions, if needed. If an application is received without reasonable time to collect this information, it may be deferred to the next application term.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive all application materials by the dates listed. We accept transfer students for fall and spring semesters. UNCG operates under rolling admission for transfers and adults, so the earlier you apply, the better. The following materials are required:

  • the application
  • $45 application fee
  • official transcripts for the secondary school attended (and GED scores or adult high school diploma, if applicable) and from all post-secondary institution(s) attended, including summer, extension, developmental, and technical credit*

*High school transcripts are not required for 2Plus or second-degree seeking students.

Transfer applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. You will be notified in writing of the decision.

  • Be eligible to return to the last institution attended .
  • Meet the UNC-System Minimum Course Requirements (MCR) for high school preparation* including:

Transfer students

Each year, we work diligently to help transfer students transition smoothly to UNCG. Following admission to the University, you will be able to view your transfer credit equivalencies. If you would like to see how your classes may transfer in advance, please use the Transfer Equivalency Course Search. Please note that this listing is not comprehensive, as new equivalencies may be added at any time. Technical, vocational, and developmental classes generally do not transfer. We accept a maximum of 64 transfer credit hours from a regionally accredited two-year schools. The maximum number of transfer hours from regionally accredited four-year school is unlimited. A minimum of 31 hours in residence is required to earn a UNCG degree.

Transfer students from NC Community Colleges

The NC Curriculum Planning Guide lists all NC Community College courses transferable to UNCG. Also included in the guide are suggested community college curriculum plans for specific UNCG programs.

Students who began an AA or AS curriculum in the fall of 1997 or later at any North Carolina community college are eligible to transfer credits under the terms of the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) between the University of North Carolina and the North Carolina Community College System:

  • Students who graduate with an AA or AS degree from any North Carolina community college, with "C" grades or better in the core curriculum, normally will receive 64 hours of credit and junior standing upon admission to UNCG. General education requirements will be considered complete. * Students pursuing majors in the College of Arts and Sciences must complete the CAR Foreign Language Requirement.
  • Students who do not graduate, but who complete the 44-semester hour General Education Core with a grade of "C" or better in each course may transfer this core upon admission to UNCG to complete UNCG general education requirements.
  • Students who neither graduate nor complete the General Education Core will transfer courses according to the UNCG Course Equivalency List for NC Community Colleges.

For details on the CAA, see your community college advisor or the CAA web site.

If you have earned an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in certain areas, or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), then you may be eligible for admission through our 2Plus program.

Freshman Transfer Students

A student who has college credit totaling fewer than 30 transferable semester hours from a regionally accredited institution is designated a "freshman transfer" and must meet requirements under both transfer and freshman admissions programs. Freshman transfer students must also submit an official SAT or ACT score.

Adult Students

Adult students have been a significant part of UNCG's undergraduate student body since the University's founding in 1892. Currently, approximately one quarter of our undergraduate students are age 24 or older.

We understand that adult students have unique needs. To assist you in completing your degree we offer several programs and services, including day or evening classes with full-time or part time schedules. Once admitted, the Office for Adult Students offers further support.

Adult students are evaluated individually for admission. If you are a prospective adult student, we encourage you to meet with an adult admissions advisor to develop a plan for continuing your studies at UNCG. To schedule an appointment, call 336.334.5243. Please bring your high school and previous college transcripts for a specific admissions recommendation, or come to learn general information about UNCG's programs and application process. You can also learn more about applying at an Adult and Transfer Student Information Session.

I've been admitted, what's next?

Once you have been admitted please follow the steps listed in the "Next Steps to Enrolling" section. This will guide you through all the steps you need to complete to begin the semester.
