Additional Information Student Health Services provides cost-effective primary and preventive health care in a convenient on-campus setting. Board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, physicians' assistants and registered nurses staff the medical clinic. Counseling, offered by licensed psychologists, counselors, and social workers, is available through the Counseling and Testing Center. Beginning in the fall semester of 2007, UNCG students in degree programs taking six or more main campus credit hours must demonstrate proof of health insurance. Students who do not provide this proof will be enrolled in a campus-endorsed student health insurance policy and billed $365.00 for the fall semester. For more information, please visit the Web site at http://studenthealth.uncg.edu.
In order to protect the general health of the University community, the General Assembly of North Carolina passed a law which mandates that students present a documented record of immunization. If you fail to present this record of immunization, your registration will be cancelled. It is therefore critical for you to meet this requirement in a timely fashion. If you need more information, contact the Student Health Services Immunization Office at (336) 334-4086. You can view the immunization requirements and forms online.
When you confirm your plans to attend UNCG by May 1 for fall admission by completing the Online Reply Form for Admitted Students, you will be mailed information concerning the Spartan Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program. This required program enables you to register for classes and familiarize yourself with the campus. It is very reassuring to have your course schedule in your hand and some familiar faces in mind when you're heading off to college. The SOAR program is the best way to prepare yourself and your family for college life. Parents and adult family members are also invited to attend our Family Program.
If you are admitted for the spring term, you will participate in SOAR just prior to the beginning of classes. Information about this program will be mailed in mid-December.
All freshmen are required to participate in the two-day overnight SOAR program in June.
Transfers and adult students are required to attend a one-day SOAR session in August. While some transfer students register for courses during SOAR, many students complete their advising and registration components prior to SOAR, taking advantage of the "Advising & Registration by Appointment" system. Information about scheduling appointments for advising and registration is shared via e-mail so be sure to activate your UNCG computer accounts and check your UNCG e-mail on a regular basis. To find an advisor and determine when advising appointments may be available, go to http://web.uncg.edu/reg/dept/deptcontact.asp.
For further information, call the Office of Orientation & Family Programs at (336) 334-5231, or visit the Web site at http://orientation.uncg.edu/.
Beginning fall 2007, laptop ownership is a prerequisite for all full-time incoming freshmen. To support this requirement, UNCG offers fully-featured wireless laptop computers from IBM/Lenovo and Apple. Only computers bought through the SLI come with a UNCG-customized software bundle that includes Microsoft Office, and complete on campus support. Additional information and purchasing options are available at the SLI Web site: http://its.uncg.edu/laptop.
UNCG provides computer accounts for all admitted and enrolled students. You can activate your computer accounts on the web as soon as you receive your admit letter. It is critical that you activate your computer accounts because a growing number of UNCG offices communicate with students by electronic means.
To activate your computer accounts on the web you will need to know your University ID number, first and last name as they appear on your admissions application, and your date of birth.
To activate your accounts visit http://its.uncg.edu/Accounts/. Your default Novell account will allow you to log into UNCGenie to sign up for housing and SOAR. Once on campus you will use this account to log into computers in the lab and access University software. You will also receive your UNCG email account, which you should check regularly. Many offices will use this email account to communicate with you prior to classes beginning, so don't miss out on important announcements.
