Planning a Campus Visit

When it comes to choosing the college that is right for you, there's nothing like the college visit. Here are a few tips for making the most of your time on campus.

  1. Visiting the UNCG campusDo your homework. Explore college Web sites to find out the basics of the schools you want to visit. Does it offer the major that interests you? How big is the average class? Does the school offer study abroad programs? How about club sports and intramurals? Answering these questions ahead of time will help you get beyond the stats during your visit, so you can focus on whether the school is a good fit for you.

  2. Plan ahead. Once you know what schools you want to visit, it’s a good idea to let them know you’re coming. Visit admissions Web sites to get information about group tours, special events, parking, and other campus visit essentials. Many sites even let you register for tours online. And if you want to sit in on a class while you’re visiting, calling ahead is a must! (To plan your visit to UNCG, go to http://web.uncg.edu/adm/visit or call (336) 334-5243.)

  3. Make a list of questions for each visit. Think about what you really want to get out of your visit. Do you need more information about your major? Have a question about student life? Want to know more about freshman housing? Keep a list of questions you want to be sure to ask, and jot down the answers so you can compare notes later.

  4. Look, listen, and learn. Try to give yourself plenty of time to walk around and observe. Do the students seem happy? Does the campus seem friendly? Could you see yourself living there? College hunting can be stressful, so this is the time to take a deep breath and see what you really think of the place. Maybe you'll know as soon as you step on campus, or maybe you'll have to compare a few schools to be sure you’ve found the school for you. But when it's right, you'll know.
