Suggested Timetable for College Planning

Junior Year: Spring
  • January - February - March
  • Meet with your school counselor to explore schools that match your interests, qualifications, and needs.
  • Take advantage of your high school career center, which may contain publications for the schools you are considering.
  • Register for and take the SAT, and request that your scores be sent to at least three schools.
  • Contact colleges for general information. Sift through the information you receive and compare it to other schools.
  • March - April - May
  • Explore college and university Web sites and make a list of the schools you want to visit.
  • Begin to visit the schools that interest you.
  • Plan your senior year carefully, reviewing college admissions requirements and your proposed course schedule.
Junior Year: Summer
  • June - August
  • Visit, visit, visit! Take part of your summer vacation to visit the schools that you are considering.


Senior Year: Fall
  • September - October
  • Application review at UNCG begins on September 1st. See our notification deadlines here.
  • Meet with your school counselor to finalize your list of schools. Pay special attention to any admissions and scholarship application deadlines.
  • Take a second look at the top schools on your list by attending open houses or campus visitation days.
  • Register for and take the SAT again. Consider taking the ACT as well.
  • Attend college fairs in your area. Ask questions! Have some prepared before attending the program.
  • October - November
  • Apply to the colleges you have chosen. If recommendations are required, ask your school counselor well in advance. Make a copy of the application for your records.
  • Some colleges have early deadlines, so be aware of these dates. Keep a calendar so you do not miss important deadlines for admissions, financial aid, and scholarships.
Senior Year: Spring
  • January
  • If you are planning to apply for financial aid, file the FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible, and no later than March 1.
  • March - April
  • Register for and attend any open house or special programs sponsored by the colleges you are considering.
  • May
  • Pay attention to confirmation and housing dates for the schools to which you have been accepted. After making your decision, return the confirmation card and any other required forms before the deadline.
