As a High School Junior Planning to Attend College...

Students walking along College Avenue What do I need to focus on most?
First and foremost, concentrate on your course work. Make the grade! Most colleges want to see that you have done consistently well in college preparatory courses throughout high school. This means maintaining a strong cumulative grade point average. Although standardized test scores (SAT and ACT) are an important part of the admissions decision, most colleges would agree that performance on these tests is not as important as performance in the classroom. Your high school grades tell an admissions committee if you have the ability and the work ethic to succeed in college. At UNCG, we believe that your grades are the best predictor of your success in college.

What classes should I take in high school?
This depends on the schools you are considering; however, the more rigorous your academic preparation, the greater your college options. The following are the minimum high school course requirements for admission to UNCG.

  • English (four years) - emphasis on grammar, composition, and literature.
  • Mathematics (four years) - Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, plus one year beyond Algebra II.
  • Science (three years) - including at least one year in life or biological science, at least one year in physical science, and at least one laboratory course.
  • Social Science (two years) - including one year in US history and one year in history, civics, economics, or sociology.
  • Foreign language (two years) - both years should be in the same language.
