Choosing a Major

Will people ever stop asking me what I'm going to study in college?

Choosing a Major at UNCG

Are you undecided about a college major and tired of everyone asking you about it? Relax! Join the club. Seventy-five percent of college students will change majors at least once, and ten percent change majors four or more times. Often the brightest students are undecided because they are good at a variety of academic areas.

So what's the key to being "undecided with a plan"? Choose a college that has:

  • A broad cross-section of majors that you are considering
  • A core curriculum that will be a foundation for any major you choose
  • Policies that make it easy to change / create majors, minors, or double majors
  • Internship experiences to help determine whether a major is a good fit for you
  • Resources to help you explore your interests and possible career paths

At UNCG, you will find more than 100 undergraduate programs from which to choose. Our core curriculum is based in the liberal arts and gives you numerous choices of courses to take while you explore academic areas that interest you. You have until the end of your sophomore year before you have to declare a major, and advisors can help you be sure that you cover your bases for majors that require prerequisite courses, such as business or nursing.* They also can help you plan double majors or major/minor combinations.

UNCG's location in the thriving Greensboro - High Point - Winston-Salem area provides a wealth of internship opportunities. Faculty members and staff in our Career Services Center can help you find internships or field experiences in the Triad or in other locations worldwide. The Career Services Center is also a valuable resource for exploring interests and careers as well as developing resume writing and interviewing skills.

So listen to your heart, take a variety of classes, and explore your interests. Ask friends, family members, and teachers about majors and careers that appeal to you. Before you know it, you will discover a major or combination of majors that is right for you, and you can answer that question with confidence!

* A word about dance, music, and interior architecture at UNCG:
These majors are professional degree programs that require separate admission beyond admission to the University. If you are considering a major in any of these areas, we encourage you to contact the department during your senior year in high school to learn about their admission requirements.
