UNCG at a Glance

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is a public, coeducational, doctoral-granting, residential university chartered in 1891. It is one of the three original institutions of The University of North Carolina System.

Location

UNCG is located in the dynamic city of Greensboro, North Carolina (population 250,000). Greensboro is the third-largest city in the state and is located about halfway between Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point make up the Piedmont Triad area, which is home to ten other four-year colleges and universities.

Enrollment

Approximately 18,500 students (33 percent male, 67 percent female) from all 50 states and more than 90 countries. The fall 2009 freshman class was the largest ever at 2,510. Minority enrollment is about 27%.

Campus Life

Students outside Cotten dormUNCG's picturesque campus includes 30 academic buildings and 24 residence halls on 210 acres. Opportunities for students include 180 student organizations, 18 intercollegiate athletic teams, intramurals, club sports, recreation center, campus golf course, student newspaper, student literary magazine, student radio station, music and choral groups, drama and dance performance groups, concert and lecture series, film series, internships, outing club, 21 fraternities and sororities, community service and field campus for fishing, swimming, and canoeing. Classes & Faculty

Average class size is 27 students. Approximately 2,000 classes are offered each semester. Student to faculty ratio is 16:1. More than 1,000 faculty teach at all levels (freshman through graduate).

Costs

For full-time students living on campus, 2009-2010 basic costs (excluding clothing, travel, and personal expenses) total approximately $10,277 for in-state students and $22,038 for out-of-state students.

Housing

Student in DormEighty percent of freshmen live on campus in 24 residence halls. Four residence halls house special residential colleges, which connect students with faculty mentors: Grogan Residence Hall, home of Grogan College; Mary Foust Residence Hall, home of Warren Ashby Residential College; South Spencer Residence Hall, home of Cornelia Strong College; and Phillips Hawkins Residence Hall, home of International House.
