Welcome! If you're a prospective UNCG student, you're in the right place! Everything you need, from academic information to our online application, is right at your fingertips.

Freshmen are students who plan to enter UNCG directly from high school or adult students who have never attended college.

About the Freshman Class

  • UNCG typically receives more than 10,000 freshman applications for the fall semester. The fall 2008 freshman class was the largest in UNCG history, with 2,493 students.
  • The fall 2008 freshman class profile:
    • Average high school GPA: 3.58
    • SAT middle 50 percent ranges: 460-560 (critical reading) and 470-570 (math)
    • Average ACT: 21.5

Freshman Requirements and Application Information

Admissions Requirements

Admission to UNCG for traditional freshmen is competitive based on a combination of your overall high school and/or college record as well as SAT or ACT scores.  In addition, in-state and out-of-state applicants must meet the following minimum high school course requirements:

  • English: 4 units (emphasis on grammar, composition, and literature)
  • Math: 4 units* (including algebra I, geometry, algebra II, and one approved course beyond algebra II)
  • Science: 3 units (including at least one unit in life or biological science, at least one unit in physical science, and at least one laboratory course)
  • Social Science: 2 units (must include one unit of U.S. history and one unit in history, economics, sociology, or civics).
  • Foreign Language: 2 units of the same language

All UNC-system schools require a weighted GPA of at least 2.0.  UNCG does not have an additional minimum; however, the average GPA is a 3.58.

Application Process

The goal of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions is to provide you with an admissions decision as quickly as possible. Freshman admission is competitive. It is in your best interest to start this process in the fall of your senior year. Students must complete their applications by the specified deadline to qualify for the notification date.

Application Deadlines

  • Notification Deadlines for fall semester
    • Received by: November 1
    • Notified no later than: December 15
  • Final application deadlines
    • Spring 2010 - December 1
    • Fall 2010 - March 1

NOTE: A new process implemented by the UNC system requires us to request additional information regarding campus safety questions, if needed. If an application is received without reasonable time to collect this information, it may be deferred to the next application term.

  • All application materials sent must be postmarked by the dates listed.
  • UNCG receives more than 10,000 freshman applications for the fall semester, and many of these arrive in late fall. The November 1, 2009 notification deadline and December 15, 2009 notification date are designed to give you a clearer expectation of our response time during our busiest time of the year.
  • Complete Applications received after November 1, 2009 will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning December 15, 2009 until March 1, 2010.
  • Applications received after March 1, 2010 will be considered on a space available basis.
  • Your application is non-binding; UNCG observes the May 1 national candidate reply date.
  • Please note that students who complete the application process and are eligible to apply for Merit Awards will receive notification prior to the specified deadline.

All domestic applicants must supply the following:

  • Application and $45 application fee
  • Official high school transcript
  • Official scores from the SAT or ACT, including the writing component.  Request that official scores be forwarded to UNCG directly from the testing agency. (For the SAT, UNCG's school code is 5913; for the ACT, the school code is 3166.
  • Official college transcripts from any post-secondary institution(s) attended, even those granting summer, extension, developmental, and technical credit.

International Students should visit the International Programs Center for additional requirements.

Dual Enrollment

High school seniors with superior academic credentials may want to supplement their high school curriculum with courses at UNCG. To determine if you are eligible to enroll as a visiting student, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 336.334.5243.
