Students who graduate with a B.S. degree in Public Health Education are lifesavers! With a focus on prevention, our program prepares students for careers or graduate studies that inspire them to positively influence the health behavior of individuals and communities as well as the living and working conditions that influence their health. Health education improves the health status of individuals, families, communities, states, and the nation, and enhances the quality of life for all people. Health education is a profession that draws from the biological, environmental, social-psychological, physical and medical sciences and as such, our program focuses on the development of individual, group, institutional, community and policy strategies to improve health.
What makes us different from the rest? Para-professionals and health professionals from other disciplines are not familiar with the specialized body of health education knowledge, skills, theories, and research, nor is it their primary interest or professional development focus.
"I love my new job, every morning I wake up and I am excited to get up and start my day and see what adventures await me. I find what I am doing to be very rewarding. I am reaching adolescents and college students and helping them to understand how important it is to take care of their bodies."Mary Conner, B.S. in Public Health Education, 2006 B.S.
The Department's Master of Public Health program is accredited by the Council of Education for Public Health and the BS program will be reviewed for approval by a Joint Committee of the American Association for Health Education and the Society for Public Health Education.
Department faculty members are engaged in research projects that add depth to their classroom teaching. Recent publications by faculty members have described their research on domestic violence, minority health, health organization management, poverty and access to health care, adolescent pregnancy prevention, school health, environmental justice, and AIDS prevention.
