What's unique about the Exercise and Sport Science Program at UNCG?
- The Fitness Leadership and Sports Medicine concentrations equip students for careers in preventive and rehabilitative exercise and fitness. These concentrations may be tailored to prepare for advanced study in athletic training, medicine, occupational therapy, or physical therapy, and for entry-level positions in the fitness industry, e.g. aquatic leadership, personal training, cardiac rehabilitation.
- The Physical Education Teacher Education concentration leads to K-12 licensure to teach physical education in North Carolina and most other states. There are opportunities for observation, participation, assisting, and teaching experiences with public school students, including those with special needs.
- The Community Youth Sport Development concentration prepares students to teach and work in community-based youth serving agencies. Students gain competence in teaching, program design, implementation and evaluation of these programs. This is a non-licensure concentration.
- The Minor in Sport Coaching reflects the eight domains of sport coaching competence recognized by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education in the publication “National Standards for Athletic Coaches, 1995”. The minor incorporates a coaching practicum and certification from the American Sports Education Program. Students interested in coaching will find this minor advantageous.
A Brief Message from the Department Head
"The Department of Exercise and Sport Science can provide a path to many different career options, from traditional physical education teaching in public and private schools to sports medicine and the fitness industry. Many students with a degree in exercise and sport science use it as a gateway to additional education in physical or occupational therapy schools, medical or physician's assistant schools." Dr. Kathleen Williams, Head, Exercise and Sport Science
