Special Application Procedures
While at UNCG you must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, have 55 credit hours and apply to the major to be eligible to apply for the upper level program. An application form and transcripts must be turned in to apply to the CSD department by May 31st. Second degree applicants and transfer students must also meet the May 31st deadline and academic requirements. Admission to UNCG does not admit you to the CSD pre-professional program. In order to take classes at the 300+ level, you must have a letter of written admittance to the major from the CSD Department.
What's Unique about the Communication Science and Disorders Department at UNCG?
- The Department offers pre-professional training in speech pathology and audiology.
- Instruction is designed to meet American Speech-Language-Hearing Association standards.
- The major satisfies some requirements for NC license in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology (a master's degree is required for a full license).
- The Department is part of the North Carolina Distance Education Consortium in Communication Sciences and Disorders.
- The Department is specifically designed for the study and remediation of communication disorders. In addition to classrooms and offices, the facilities include a speech science lab, a neuro lab, a library, a preschool language classroom, audiology labs, a student workroom, and nine individual therapy and observation rooms.
- UNCG has a nationally ranked graduate program in
Speech Pathology and Audiology.

- Outside scholarships come from community groups like the Quota Club in Greensboro.
- Special job fairs and career resources are made available to majors.
Graduate Schools and Careers
- Students pursue a master's degree or a job in a related field.
- All UNCG students graduating with the master of arts degree in the past five years are currently employed in schools, hospitals, and other special clinics.
- A master's degree in speech-language is required for minimal competence recognition, for national certification, and for state licensure. An Au.D. is required for practice in Audiology, and our undergraduate curriculum prepares students for study elsewhere in a clinical Au.D. program.
- Popular graduate schools include The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, The University of Florida, East Carolina University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and many others.
- Common Career Choices: schools, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, public health departments, home health agencies, and private practice.
- Many UNCG graduates have gone on to earn their Ph.D., including the department head.
Career Experience through Internships
You will begin clinical practice in the UNCG Speech and Hearing Center, located on campus. Subsequent clinical practice is available in area schools, hospitals, and clinics, with supervision by UNCG faculty members and on-site clinical personnel.

Faculty Research
Faculty research interests include speech and hearing sciences, normal communication processes, child language development and disorders, language and literacy, hearing in musicians, tinnitus, speech perception, craniofacial disorders, adult communication disorders, and supervisory processes.

- UNCG Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association
- UNCG Chapter of Operation Smile (a community outreach program that raises money for philanthropic foundations that relate to the department)
- Greensboro Consortium Student Chapter of the National Black Association of Speech-Language-Hearing (cosponsored with NC A&T University)
- Support groups for clients with aphasia, fluency, and voice disorders meet here and/or involve our students.
