A Brief Message from the Department Head
"Our faculty are all active researchers, and they bring the special knowledge and excitement that research creates into the classroom. We encourage our students to set high academic goals for themselves, and we are all very willing to work individually to help them achieve those goals. All we ask from students is a serious commitment and motivation to succeed." Dr. George Michel, Psychology Department Head
Special Help to Students
"Many faculty, including myself, have begun to make extensive use of the World Wide Web for posting class assignments, lecture outlines, and additional material for classes. This effort helps reduce misunderstandings by providing a source of information for students outside class time. That way, my one-on-one conversations with students can focus on interesting issues rather than administrative questions about exam dates." Dr. Rob Guttentag, Professor of Psychology
A Student Success Story
"A student who worked in my lab as an undergraduate earned a graduate fellowship from the National Science Foundation worth $15,000 per year for three years. After graduating from UNCG, she entered the doctoral program at the University of Illinois. We are very proud of the accomplishments of students like her who benefit from the research experience available to undergraduates in our department." Dr. Edward Wisniewski, Associate Professor of Psychology
"Two students who worked in my lab as undergraduates co-developed a research study that we just submitted for publication in a top Psychology journal. One of those students applied to Ph.D. programs in Cognitive Neuroscience, and he was courted by the best programs in the country. He'll be attending Princeton University next all to work with some
of the biggest names in the field." Dr. Michael Kane, Associate Professor of Psychology
"One of the student speakers at the department's graduation ceremony this year was a student who was born with cerebral palsy. Through his own hard work and determination and the support of a number of faculty in the department, he was successful in earning his bachelor's degree with a major in Psychology, and next year he will be attending a graduate program to earn his Master's degree in counseling." Dr. Robert Guttentag, Director of Undergraduate Studies
